What is it?

The site marks the location where Maurice Wilks made the first drawing of a Land Rover

Facts -

  • In 1947 mechanical engineer Maurice Wilks made the first ever drawing of a Land Rover in the sand, to explain to his brother his concept of an all-terrain vehicle. 
  • The Land Rover Defender was one of the most successful road vehicles in history – more than two million were made before production ceased in January 2016.
  • In 2015, 6 Land Rovers made a 1km wide drawing of a Land Rover Defender in the sand of Red Wharf Bay
  • In 2018, on the 70th anniversary of the Land Rover, hundreds of Land Rover owners drove their cars to Red Wharf Bay to create the outline of the vehicle on the beach
